Iain Nicol

I studied law at Aberdeen University, graduating in 1989 and undertaking the Diploma in Legal practice the following year. Within a few years of qualifying as a solicitor, I began to specialise in Personal Injury Law. I’m very often acting for clients at extremely stressful and difficult times in their lives. Whether as a result of a road or work accident or medical negligence, the injuries sustained can be life changing and have a devastating effect on the victim, with the knock-on financial consequences. I see it as my job to understand the impact their accident has had and fight to recover the maximum amount of compensation and reduce the financial hardship. I understand how important a client’s claim is to them and place a great emphasis on being easily contactable. Achieving a successful outcome and seeing the difference that makes to a client is extremely rewarding.

I was accredited as a specialist in Personal injury Law in 2003 and in professional Negligence Law in 2006. I was delighted to be only the 3rd Scottish solicitor to be made a Fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers in 2018.

As my career has progressed, doors have opened to allow me to contribute to various panels and committees. I acted as a peer reviewer for the Law Society for 15 years, checking the standards of work being done by other lawyers. I have been a member of the Law Society’s Pursuers’ Panel since it was created in 2003, offering specialist advice on professional negligence claims against solicitors. I am now the Convener of the Law Society’s Civil Justice Committee which represents the interests of both solicitors and the public in all matters of Civil Justice. The committee work allows me to have an input into all important legislation and policy decisions relating to Personal Injury law and practice in Scotland.
